WASH: Empowering Communities Through Water, Sanitation & Hygiene
Melian Foundation’s WASH initiative is dedicated to improving water, sanitation, and hygiene outcomes for marginalized communities. The goal is to build sustainable systems that communities can manage independently—improving health outcomes and overall well-being.
Our Strategic Approach
The foundation provides infrastructure support, such as water tanks, handwashing facilities, and latrines, while building capacity among local actors to manage these resources. This dual approach strengthens the sustainability of systems long-term.
Community Empowerment
Working in collaboration with local governments and residents, Melian Foundation promotes community ownership of WASH infrastructure. Community engagement is central to ensuring proper maintenance and behavioral change around sanitation practices.
Alignment With National & Global Goals
The program contributes to the implementation of Tanzania's National Sanitation Campaign and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation), targeting both public and household settings.
Sustainable Outcomes
By preventing water-borne diseases and enhancing hygiene, WASH interventions support broader development outcomes, including improved nutrition, increased school attendance, and better maternal and child health.
