SickleCare Project
In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Melian Foundation is implementing the SickleCare Project to address the growing burden of sickle cell disease (SCD) in Tanzania. The initiative aims to improve early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and community awareness, with a focus on high-prevalence regions.
About the Project
SickleCare is a strategic intervention led by Melian Foundation and the Ministry of Health to combat SCD among children under five. The project supports early screening and diagnostic services in underserved communities, targeting regions with high SCD prevalence.
Key Activities
The project focuses on newborn screening, health worker training, community education, and system strengthening. It aims to improve early diagnosis, ensure timely treatment, and provide psychosocial support to families affected by SCD.
Implementation Regions
The project operates in Tabora, Geita, Shinyanga, and Mara—regions with high incidence rates of SCD. The goal is to screen over 50,000 newborns and children under five to ensure early detection and linkages to care services.
